The Most Expensive Sapphire, Times Two

Sotheby’s set a new world record for the most expensive sapphire at its October 7 auction in Hong Kong.  Then it broke that record again at the same auction.

First, this stunning Cartier sapphire and emerald ring sold for $2.3 million, setting a new record sapphire price per carat of $193,975.

This sapphire and emerald ring by Cartier was briefly the most expensive sapphire in the world, before a second sapphire at the same Sotheby's auction broke the record.

Then this 17.16-carat, unheated Kashmir sapphire and diamond ring sold for $4.1 million, setting a new world record sapphire price per carat of $236,404.

This 17.16-carat Kashmir sapphire ring is the most expensive sapphire. It sold at Sotheby's for $4.06 million, a record $236,404 per carat.

The previous record price per carat for a sapphire was set by a 28.18-carat Kashmir sapphire and diamond ring that sold for $5,093,000, or $180,731 per carat,  at Sotheby’s New York in April 2014.

This 28.18-carat Kashmir sapphire was once the most expensive sapphire, selling for $5 million in April 2014, or $180,731 per carat.

Which is your favorite? For me, desire the fact that I want to dive into the big blues, it’s that divinely Art Deco Cartier ring.
